This historical fantasy series is cozy fantasy adjacent and is set in a whimsical version of 1930s Pittsburgh. The fae and academic elements will appeal to fans of Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries. The trilogy follows the return of bumbling sorcerer Leo Love after his research in Faery, and his struggles settling back into Pittsburgh life.
Book 1, The Fantastic Fae Folly
When graduate student Leo Love ventures through a faery portal, he dreams of fame, accolades, and a cushy job as a magic studies professor. Unfortunately, when he returns to Pittsburgh from his research, he finds the country embroiled in the Great Depression, and more alarmingly, there’s a void in his memories where the last seven years should be.
As he tries to pick up where his life left off, he discovers himself changed. He can no longer touch iron or tell a lie. With the help of Charlie, his old college roommate, he aims to unravel the mystery of what happened to him.
But Leo soon finds out he didn’t come back alone. Mysterious and fantastical creatures seem to be lurking around every corner. There’s a strange curse on his arm written in a language he can’t read. And there’s a mysterious woman who seems intent on ruining his academic career with awkward hijinks. If she doesn’t get him killed first.
