Betta’s Longberry Rolls

While I chose to showcase Eino’s Hen’s nests as the recipe at the end of The Driftcap Inn, there are other recipes I wanted to put together to share. The latest is Betta’s Longberry Rolls. Longberries are like dates, which make a delicious date cinnamon roll. I’ve made these several times and they’ve become my new favorite way to have cinnamon rolls. The dates just add extra flavor that I love.

Before I share the recipe, this is a quick reminder that if you want to get recipes long before they drop on my blog, make sure you are signed up to my newsletter. Recipes are one of the extras I share to subscribers. You also get a bonus chapter of The Driftcap Inn about Joren and Eino’s first meeting when you subscribe.

Now on to the recipe!

Longberry Rolls

Buy a sheet of pastry dough or use your favorite recipe (for gluten free I recommend the recipe by The Loopy Whisk. This is the dough I always make and it never fails me.)

Ingredients

Cinnamon Date Filling:
1 cup pureed dates
2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 tsp melted butter
Pinch of salt

Cream Cheese Icing:
1/2 cup cream cheese
1/2 butter
1 tsp vanilla
1 tsp cinnamon
1 cup powdered sugar

Directions

Longberry Rolls

1. To make the date filling, cover the dates with boiling water in a bowl and cover the bowl for about 10 minutes.
2. After 10 minutes drain and reserve the water. It makes a great tea sweetener to have with the rolls.
3. Puree the dates in a blender.
4. Add the cinnamon, vanilla, salt, and butter and mix.
5. Roll out your pastry dough into a long rectangle. The dough should be about 1/4 inch thick.
6. Spread the date mixture across the dough.
7. Roll the dough and cut into even strips that are about 2 inches wide.
8. Cover the rolls and proof them in a warm place for about an hour to an hour and a half or until the dough has doubled in size.
9. Warm up 3/4 cup cream and pour over the rolls.
10. Bake at 350 covered with tinfoil for 20 minutes.
11. Remove the tinfoil and bake for another 15 minutes or until the rolls are golden brown on top.
12. While the rolls cool make the icing.

Cream Cheese Icing:
1. Whisk the softened the butter and cream cheese until smooth.
2. Add the cinnamon, vanilla, and powdered sugar and whisk until smooth
3. Spread over the warm rolls
Serve the rolls while still warm

And there you have it! If you happen to make these I’d love to see some photos. If you share with me on social media I’ll share your photos with everyone.

  1. Dear Ms. Kate (I’m picturing Leora saying Mr. Eino),
I just finished The Driftcap Inn. 10/10, will probably be my favorite book of the year. Thank you for creating a place in the clouds that felt like home. It’s really a masterpiece, I don’t know how it’s not as popular as say Sarah Beth Durst’s The Spellshop. I immediately bought another of your books (I read it on Apple Books, where thankfully the rest of your oeuvre is just a click away!) Again, thank you for creating a book that feels like home. I really needed it, thank you.
Can’t wait to try the recipes!
I saw in your bio you majored in history. Might I recommend Vonda N. McIntyre’s The Moon and the Sun. It is magical realism, in the court of Louis XIV, they find a “mermaid” (she is nothing like Ariel) and add her to his menagerie. The book is not cozy, and is in fact lascivious at times, but historically accurate, one heck of a what-if, and an interesting read. The writing style is more high-fantasy, often drawn out, but it focuses on historical context and a strong female protagonist who is into science–science and faith are tested with the appearance of a mermaid, as the main character and her subject of study learn to communicate.
I adored the movie adaptation, it felt like a live-action Barbie Movie from the 2000’s, but it really has *nothing* to do with the book other than the main concept. I mean nothing.
Anywho, thanks again and all the best!
Elora (really, that’s my name, not rewriting Leora’s name!)

    1. Thank you so much for reading and for the support! I wish I could live on The Driftcap Inn, and it’s great to see that it resonates with others! There will be more recipes coming soon that I’m testing as well as more cozy books in the series about new inns. And if you want more of The Driftcap Inn, make sure you sign up to my newsletter to get the bonus chapter about Eino and Joren’s first meeting.

I’ll be sure to check out The Moon and the Sun. I love a good historical fantasy.
